English Language Acquisition
The English Language Acquisition (ELA) programme at Vienna International School supports multilingual learners to develop the language
skills needed for academic success and confident everyday communication. Grounded in the School’s commitment to diversity and inclusion,
the programme recognises that every student’s language profile is unique
and provides targeted pathways for learners to reach their full potential.
From Primary through Secondary, ELA is aligned with the IB PYP Language Phases, MYP Language Acquisition framework and Diploma Pro-

or intermediate support through co-teaching, scaffolded instruction, differentiated classroom practice, small-group lessons and targeted support.
ELA teachers from GP through Grade 5 co-plan and co-teach with classroom teachers, collaborating closely to align language goals with content
objectives. This integrated model supports students in developing social
and academic English while accessing and engaging with the curriculum.
In Secondary, students are placed in ELA or English B courses that
strengthen communication, multiliteracy, critical thinking and literary
appreciation while nurturing international mindedness and the IB Learner Profile. Instruction is delivered by a specialist ELA team and is closely
coordinated with classroom teachers to ensure coherence and continuity
of learning. In addition to discrete ELA classes that intentionally mirror
the texts, rigor, and learning experiences of mainstream peers, ELA students can receive targeted, language-rich instruction from a dedicated
ELA teacher embedded within mainstream subject areas. This support
bridges content and language acquisition, ensuring students can fully access grade-level curriculum, engage in academic discourse, and demonstrate their understanding with confidence. Through strategic scaffolding, explicit vocabulary development, and real-time language coaching,
